Acceptance into the Marketing Area's Ph.D. program marks the beginning of an exciting and challenging career.
By describing your responsibilities as a doctoral student we hope to facilitate your progress toward earning a
Ph.D. But first and foremost, we emphasize that this is your program. You alone will determine your success or
failure. Nothing happens, regardless of background and intelligence, if students do not have the desire and
drive to complete the degree.
What separates a Ph.D. from other degree holders? It has been said that Ph.D.s are students who are willing to
beat their heads against brick walls until the walls give way. This imagery conveys the determination required.
If you are accepted into the program, you have demonstrated a certain level of intelligence that makes us
believe you can do the work. You must supply the hard labor. Additional courses are available for those who
feel their background did not sufficiently prepare them for this challenge. Sometimes this means only learning
new study skills.
We will surround you with faculty who once completed this task and continue to extend their degree work, and
with capable, hard-working student colleagues. Please do not underestimate the importance of others in the
program. They will be valuable allies throughout the journey and for the balance of your career.
NOTE: The Marketing Area is not recruiting new doctoral students for Fall 2007 admission. Applications are however invited for Fall 2008.
