At the Gatton College of Business & Economics our 2011-2012 academic year has begun with great enthusiasm. At our annual Gatton Welcome event we introduced more than 400 new and transfer undergraduate students to our College. Additionally, this year we welcomed 40 Master in Accountancy students, 60 MBA students into our one year program, and 22 Ph.D. candidates to Gatton. While our College is in a year of leadership transition, we continue to uphold our commitment to teach and prepare world-ready graduates. We hope you will read through some of the exciting news items we have included in this email. As always, we are grateful to each of you for the many ways you partner with us and aid us in transforming the lives of many. Thank you for your continued support of the Gatton College.

Candidates for the Dean of the Gatton College Visit Campus


In September, based upon the recommendations of the Dean’s Search Committee, University of Kentucky Provost Kumble R. Subbaswamy invited three candidates for the Dean of the Gatton College to campus. During their visits, the candidates met with faculty and staff in small group and open forum meetings. The candidates included: Michael B. Mikhail, Director of the School of Accountancy at the W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University; J. Dennis Cradit, Dean, College of Business, Southern Illinois University; and David Blackwell, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Mays Business School, Texas A&M University.

Gatton Scholars Earn FAMA-DFA Top Prize


A team of scholars in the University of Kentucky's Gatton College of Business and Economics recently brought home the top prize for best research paper published in the Journal of Financial Economics during the past year. [ Read the full article here ]

President Capilouto Visits Faculty and Staff
at Gatton College


President Eli Capilouto believes that outstanding undergraduate education is a central piece of a pre-eminent public research institution. The Gatton College of Business and Economics is an example of where undergraduate education is intertwined with research and service that is making a difference, Capilouto said after visiting with Gatton faculty and staff as part of his campus conversations. Gatton Team Set For 2011 National Biz Quiz


For the fourth consecutive year, students from the University of Kentucky's Gatton College of Business & Economics will head to the annual Wall Street Journal National Biz Quiz competition at The Ohio State University this fall. Gordon Holbein, a senior lecturer in strategy and leadership at Gatton who serves as the team's coach, recently announced the selection of three students and one alternate chosen on the basis of a quick recall competition.

Former Gatton Dean Inducted
Into Bluegrass Business Hall of Fame


Richard W. "Dick" Furst, dean emeritus of the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business and Economics and co-founder of the Bluegrass Angels, recently was inducted into Junior Achievement's 2011 Bluegrass Business Hall of Fame for his contribution to business and quality of life in Central Kentucky. In addition to his 22-year service as dean, Furst played a pivotal role in providing traction for new economic development directions based on commercialization of university research at the University of Kentucky and the state level.

Gatton MBA Grads Help Haitians,
Gain Experience


Recent MBA graduates from the University of Kentucky College of Business and Economics had the opportunity to translate their business skills to a real-world situation in Haiti, thereby helping the people of the impoverished nation while gaining valuable experience in the process.
